Help using this blog

On this page I am going to post breif guides on using some of this blog’s features for those of you that don’t know your RSS from your CSS. There are plenty of guides around on the net, but this is going to be my little guide to what I have personally found to be the best things to use!

The guides are all below, they are:

RSS… Really Simple Syndication… but is it really that simple?! Once it’s set up, it can be, and I shall try my best to help you make it so…

I have recently found this great video that also explains how to use RSS, so give it a watch…

There are two types of Internet users, those that use RSS and those that don’t. This video is for the people who could save time using RSS, but don’t know where to start.

RSS, sometimes referred to as a newsfeed or a feed, is a method of keeping yourself up to date with a website or blog without having the keep checking back or relying on e-mail notification.

Now, to recieve an RSS feed, most guides will tell you to use an aggregator which is a separate program or website that you run which keeps track of all your feeds. My problem with this is that with most you have to load up a separate program (much like an e-mail client) to view the feeds. This to me is no better than checking your e-mail, so you may as well just sign up to the newletter of the website and be done with it. If however you still fancy doing it this way, there is a good guide here at Lockergnome.

My way, while it still requires a separate program, has this program constantly running in the taskbar, or on the screen taking up minimal real-estate. This then flashes at you when a feed is updated, and allows you to read it by hovering your mouse over the small icons. This program that I use is Klipfolio.
I would suggest that this is the easiest way to get into RSS. Once you have installed it, download the feed viewer klip and install it. Activate the kilp, go to the klip setup, and copy and paste the feed address into the feed viewer address path.

Et voila! The feed is now updated at the interval that you set it to in the properties, and you will be notified when new items are posted :)

Hopefully that explanation is clear, but if you need more information on setting up Klipfolio, then check out their help website.
If you want even more information on RSS feeds, the the BBC website has a useful article with a bit more information.

That’s all the help articles I have at the moment - if you would like to see something in particular, or don’t understand anything on my blog, please feel free to contact me and i’ll see what i can do!
