uTorrent - great BitTorrent client

uTorrentFor nearly 3 years now i have been using Azureus for all my BitTorrent needs. At the time, this was the easiest client to set up, use and download using, and I couldnt found anything better.

Until now…

I came across uTorrent about a month ago, and while it looked good, i really couldnt be bothered to go through the effort of changing over from Azureus. However, this morning, i started having a problem with the NAT testing (the test for checking the data can get through) on Azureus (even though my ports were definately open), so i thought i’d give uTorrent and try to see whether it had the same problems…

And what a breeze. It took me all of 5minutes to install, set up, and continue downloading my current torrents using uTorrent. I didnt expect that!

This ease was partially helped by the fact that the client is all wrapped up in a single exe file, with no install necessary. Simply copy the file to your desired location and run. This is a massive advantage for first time users over Azureus as to use Azureus you also need to install the Java Runtime Environment - an un-neccessay hassle for a novice who may not already have this installed.

The interface once you run the program is also incredibly simple to use. It appears that the author(s) have clearly modelled the design on Azureus, as there are some clear similarities. However, alot of the ‘clunk’ has gone, yet the useful features (such as RSS syndication and different upload speeds when not downloading) have remained.

All in all, this is, in the words of Bill and Ted, a ‘most excellent’ BitTorrent client, and while it is early days in my usage, i have now set it as my default client. In the next couple of days, I may even write a mini-guide on how to use this and mininova to download torrent files (only legal ones, of course!).

[…] Yet another ringing endorsement for the Bit Torrent client uTorrent. I have been an avid user of Azureus since the open source client launched many years ago, infact I’m sure that close to 99.9% of the time over these last few years it has been working away in the background so for me you could understand my reluctance to change. I used a trackback to this post on my end and strangely, it hasn’t shown up yet here. Hmm. I wonder if it’s because I’m using WP 2.0 now?

[…] Gambit’s Blog has a great link to a BitTorrent client called uTorrent. I fully admit that I have zero knowledge about BitTorrent files. However, the program GB links to not only accepts BitTorrent feeds, but it also creates them. However, because I have no knowledge of how to work with BT files, I’m not sure how it works. […]

Great client, I agree. For the sake of clarity can people tell me which port number theyre using for utorrent as I recently changed by ISP/router and am having problems for the first time.Any replies appreciated

    Gambit Says:

Use a high port - it really should make any difference so long as you have the correct ports open on your router. Dont use the defauly 6882 or whatever it is tho - think a lot of ISP’s throttle that
